CREATING A COLOURFUL SPACE

IMG_2776.jpg

In my recent project I decided to play with a pop of colours for my client's small entertaining space in the house.  I haven't created some thing this vibrant in a while. Here it is, featuring select collections from Bob Mitchell and William Gold in custom fabrics.  The large painting in the adjoining area is a commission from Hans-Guenter Hoeffken in Berlin, Germany, titled - Colourful Pond!

SPECIFICATION FOR A BOUTIQUE SOFA

2016 saw the manifestation of a custom made sofa taken from the initial drawing concept to 60 days in the making at a custom sofa and upholstery workshop. A very East-West style not ordinarily found in most furniture showrooms. The design drew inspiration from Nicholas Purcell and the commission went into production at Fabulous Furnishing’s workshop after deciding on the ideal measurements, wood finish and selecting a durable custom fabric.  Several progress visits later here is the final piece viewed from concept drawing to finished product.  Specifying custom is definitely worth waiting for!

COPPER BROWN AND AQUA BLUE AT THE VANCOUVER HOME AND DESIGN SHOW 2015!

The Annual Home and Design Show in Vancouver’s Convention Center was where all the excitement was in town from Oct 22nd - 25th.  It was an opportunity to play with cinnamon copper, aqua blue and white with a touch of Mid-Century to stage my client’s booth - Safe Pacific Inc. A 10 x 10 foot space, it heralded the warmth and cozy feel of a small space amongst its big neighbours at the show!  A great weekend always, allowing you to engage with the Vancouver Design Community in one place!

THE LARSEN COLLECTION BY VERZELLONI BRINGS A FRESH APPEAL TO SECTIONALS

Sleek and refined, The Larsen sectional collection designed by Verzelloni Italy comes with a fresh perspective of having a corner ottoman connect the 2 pieces.  Offers a more open feel to the space considering the corner in most sectionals is a waste of seating capacity. Experience the design at Spencer Interiors in Vancouver.  Photo credit Verzelloni.it

LOOK UP ! MOSAIC DESIGN FOR A CEILING - TAMARA BISTRO

Art on the ceiling is often passed by when designing.  However, it can take center stage in a restaurant because the ceiling is like a huge blank canvas available to play with and introduce something dramatic.  Get inspired by this ceiling mosaic created for the Tamara Bistro in South Miami Beach’s Art Deco hotel - The National.  Tamara de Lempicka, the modernist polish born artist very inspired by cubism was a well recognized painter from the roaring 1920s.  If you are in South Miami Beach do not miss dining here for an ambiance of the 1920s.  The mosaic was inspired by “Young Lady in Green” c. 1927. The original Oil painting on plywood created by the artist can be viewed at The National Museum of Modern Art in Paris.  A nostalgic memory of my yesteryears in Miami Beach’s Art Deco district.

TOIL BEHIND THE GLAMOUR ! Frieze show men at work - Eros Cinema

This magnificent frieze for the auditorium wall can be seen at Eros Cinema in Mumbai if you are watching a movie in the mezzanine floor !  A Grand design to compliment the grandeur of hollywood musicals that were seen in this cinema, including My Fair Lady which screened here continuously for almost a year in the 1960s. The sculptural work depicts the toils of stage set design behind the grand cinematic experience.  Illustrated from my book  Bombay Art Deco Architecture.

A PLAY OF SYMMETRY AND ASSYMETRY - Lobby floor design in marble

An Art Deco design for a lobby floor of the commercial building (Manekji Wadia Building) in Mumbai.  A playful balance of symmetry and asymmetry containing linear and circular segments for the design composition.  An illustration from my book “Bombay Art Deco Architecture”

ALCOVE LIGHTING DESIGN - A Streamlined Silhouette

Sculpted into the centre of wall and ceiling for continuous alcove lighting brings a whole new feeling to emphasize design than alcove lighting more commonly designed at the corners of a ceiling.  I am Inspired by the alcove lighting design employed for the Art Deco New Empire Cinema in Mumbai.  An Illustration from my book “Bombay Art Deco Architecture”.

DESIGN FOR BEETHOVEN’S 5TH SYMPHONY?

Signature design for the entrance floor to the Viscay Hotel in Miami Beach. There is a subtle interpretation for the inclusion of three dots and a dash in the overall design composition.  In morse code it symbolizes the letter “V” or could it be the hotel owner’s love for Beethoven’s 5th symphony ?  Whichever of the two, it elevates floor design to a new level !
